A Rifle in Every Pot

Glenn Reynolds of Instapundit fame writes in the New York Times of new, albeit very localized, efforts to promote a culture where individuals rather than the nanny state take ultimate responsibility for their own physical safety.
Last month, Greenleaf, Idaho, adopted Ordinance 208, calling for its citizens to own guns and keep them ready in their homes in case of emergency. It’s not a response to high crime rates. As The Associated Press reported, “Greenleaf doesn’t really have crime … the most violent offense reported in the past two years was a fist fight.†Rather, it’s a statement about preparedness in the event of an emergency, and an effort to promote a culture of self-reliance.
The next time you call 911, assuming you ever have to do so, remember that you could have pulled out your weapon and controlled the situation yourself in the same amount of time it took to pick up the phone and start waiting for events to take their course without any control on your part.

I agree with you Trevor
But Sadley most police officers think that if you own a gun, then your a danger to them.
I use to work with a small force part time and was amazed on the attitudes towards people that the officers swore to protect. They were treated as a threat towards the officers in private.. I use to get into small arguements about the talk and basically gave up after awhile.
To me.. this country is going to Heck in the handbasket.. I will keep my weapons as long as I can.

I don’t know what most police officers think but I do know a few who strongly support private and responsible gun ownership…hopefully most do.
Either way, I’ll continue to exercise my natural right to self-defense any way I see fit.

Trevor, I’m related to several Cops and most that I’ve met fall somewhere between you and Kitanis. They DO believe in the individual right to own and carry guns. Unfortunately, due to the people they come in contact with every day, they also view ANYBODY that they don’t know, as a threat. It might not seem right, but it has also kept many of them alive, when nowadays 12 yr olds are amed AND dangerous.

smart city. You never know what is going to happen and it’s always best to make sure you’re taken care of. Hopefully the town is also implementing gun safety education courses

I would highly suggest that 75% of todays Drivers need remedial drivers training every ten years in this country myself. Same difference.. different deadly device:-)

Actually, statistically speaking, cars kill a lot more people than guns in the U.S.
You decide which is more lethal.

When I run for President (cough) , I will advocate gun safety classes for all high school seniors. Makes sense doesn’t it?

Trevor says:
If you run for President, maybe you can convince America that we should stop collectively paying for people’s illegitimate children. People’s basic lack of responsible behavior worries me a lot more than gun safety.
