If one is to choose people to govern then I agree with you.However, I think the choice is between a government controlled by a confining religion and a government that does not legitimize religious control over all members of society.
I believe that 200+ years of secular government, and 99.9% Judeo-Christian leadership, has worked well.
I see no need to change now.
