Anyone fired this beauty? Springfield Armory XD Sub Compact .40 S&W

XD9802HCSP06 Black

I think I’m going to buy one of these when I get home. Anyone have any practical experience with Springfield Armory weapons? I have a Glock 23 already and I’m really quite taken with the .40 S&W round. This pistol just looks fun to shoot. I should be able to get one for $400. Maybe $650 by the time I get done with accessories.

I own a xd sub compact 40. I use it as my primary carry.I like everything about the pistol. The only problem I have is the trigger pull. This is my first 40cal and the only one with two triggers. When I fire this weapon I shoot a shot group of 1" at 25yrds. but I pull it to the left about 6" off the target. I would love for the trigger pull to be about 2lbs and 3lbs.

I bought my xd 40 subcom about 3 weels ago and have the slide lock malfunctioning at least a half-dozen times out of a hundred rounds. I have put every kind of ammunition through it and have eliminated every variable possible, I'm sure its simply a design issue. Slide lock stem is to long
  • take the power back
it is a great gun ... makes a glock feal like a piece of shit

I love my xd 9mm and my subcompact 40 very good guns....but the 45.not so much I was at the shooting rang and a perosn next to me had the xd 45 tac and it jammed as well....so stay away from the 45 xd I would not get one

I've had the SA XD 40 sub compact for about a year now and love it. It shoots just as accurately as my Glock 22 which I have as my duty weapon and has performed flawlessly. I picked up the XD Gear extention mag for it and love that. The only thing I like better on my Glock is the finish. I have the 22 since 2002 and it is amazing how the finish stands up.

I have the SA XD 40 subcompact. It is my primary carry chl pistol. Shoots very well with tight grouping even at 25 yrds. I have fired many rounds through it without any jams or complications. I paid $525 for mine out the door. Another factor that I like is that it is not ammo specific. If its the right caliber it will fire it will out fail. There are also a lot of carry options for this pistol. It is a very fun gun to shoot.

I have owned the XD Sub-Compact in .40 for a year now and I can say without a doubt it is a great gun. I am a police officer and I carry it daily on a Galco ankle holster while working plain clothes details. It is easy to conceal, very secure and comfortable. I have probably fired around 500 rounds through it without any problems. It fits in my hand better than a baby glock and is just as accurate as a full size Glock 22. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and accurate concealed carry weapon.

I own a xd sub compact in .40sw. I am very pleased with the weapon. I have several hundred rounds through it and jamming is not an issue for me.
  • R,III
I recently purchased a XD-40 subcompact. I've compared and fired a few small arm weapons in over 20 years of military service and the XD-40 appears to be the real deal. It's a perfect daily concealed carry weapon and after I took it out the box and to the range to fire, it delivered as advertised; six o clock holds resulted in x-ring shots and it's extremely accurate at 25 yards for a subcompact. Fired initially 60 rounds (S&W 185 FMJ) through it, no jams no issues. If you're in the market for a great close quarters fire arm that's cost effective and handles well, take a look at a SIG or Glock, but purchase an XD-40, you'll not be disappointed.
  • Why are you getting rid of the gun? I'm interested of course. If you'll contact me trevor[at]trevorsnyder.com we can talk.
  • joey
i have the exact gun. it is used and im looking to sell it. asking around $300 for it. very well taken care of. only fired about 100 times.
  • gman
I have owned the XD45 for 2 years now, thousands of rounds, all kinds, but mostly the cheapest crap I can find, without a single malfunction. I believe that a new XD should be "broken in" in the following way: load the mag up fully with rounds, then rack the slide back and lock it and let it sit a few days. The factory springs are very stiff, to the point of being too stiff when new. I think that those with problematic XDs just need to do this and everything will be fine.

Also the comment about carrying with a round in the chamber, but the gun decocked? How on earth would one do this with a striker fired weapon?? This person obviously knows very little about modern pistols.

I CURRENTLY OWN ONE OF THESE PUPPIES AND ABSOLUTLY LOVE IT I CARRY CONCLED WITH THIS WEAPON AND IT HAS JUST THE PERFECT SET AND KNOCK DOWN POWER ANY ONE SHOULD NEED WITH HARDLY ANY KICK IT IS JUST A FUN WEAPON TO SHOOT AND OWN

@Michael: Thats kinda funny being that Springfield Armory pistols are made in CROATIA!!!! I dont think your friend has a clue as to what he's talking about! No offense...Now if he'sreferring to a "lower end" american made firearm, such a s the HI-Point, 9mm or 45, that you buy for around $139- 169...the "lower end weapons will quite often jam on you for one of four reasons...the most common being a limp wrist upon firing your weapon. I've owned 3 springfield armory firearms now and Ihave not had a single problem with any of them! Just bought my XD 45 ACP Popped 350 rounds through her and she's a keeper!!!!This lil girl's a happy shootin camper :)
  • I'm an old reliable 1911 afficionado and .45 guy, but this 40 XD with a 3"bbl has got me twitchy to the point of puttin' in an order. A fine piece of concealed personal protection...no doubt. Within 20' not to worry about stopping power. Three quick, tight rounds up close and personal is fine in a 40
  • I agree 100% about the stopping power. I've done some testing. A .40 is fine for a regular unarmored target at anywhere up to 25 yards and probably a bit further out.
  • gary
Have now had my XD40 Sub for a little over a year. Only a few misfeeds with reloads. Point and shoot for real! Best and most reliable carry and conceal I've owned. Keep it clean and it works great.
  • Carl
I just purchased a used XD-40. First trip to range, with range purchased target ammo, I loved the pistol immediately. It feels very good in my hand, feels balanced, sights are sweet. I had small groups immediately. Then I had a missfeed, few rounds later I had another feed. Out of 100 rounds, I had 5 or 6 missfeeds. Unless I can get this weapon repaired and fire a few hundred rounds without a missfire, I won't feel comfortable with this pistol.
  • RickRock11
I have the XD40 Subcompact bitone (black/stainless). I have used it as my primary concealed carry weapon in a pocket holster for about a year now. When Springfield says the XDs are point & shoot, they mean it. This is an extremely accurate gun to have such a short barrel. I have fed many types of ammo through it, and it eats them all with no FTFs exepct one, and that was using an oddball, funny-shaped tracer round.
  • Wolf74
This is perfect for self defence or close quarters that you can buy for the price! I prefer the XD models over the Glock (any Glock), OMG!!! Here it comes... Calm down Glock Fans, They are GREAT guns, people are going to say I don't know what I'm talking about, but the XD's (any model) is #1 in my book, but that's only my opinion. I WILL own one of each before I die! Matter of fact, I'd even make a deal where Springfield could use my entire truck for their advertisement's! I would drive it proudly! THANK YOU Springfield!!! Especially for the XD,s!

    P.S. i own an xd-9 tactical, an xd-45 service. (no subcompacts), a Glock 17, A kimber Desert Warrior , A springfield TRP, and a SIG p-220. A sig-556 carbine, and a Olympic arms m4 in 6.8 SPC.

XD-45 bitone (green/stainless) service is my favorite, and constant carry. 4200 rounds, 20 yard POA/POI. 0 Failure to feed. 0 Failure to fire. 0 failure to eject. windy, desert, high altitude environment.

If you dont like the XD consider if you are just brand bashing, or are you compaints legitimate? :) ITS ok to love Glock as well.
For you guys that are throwing in the comments about your Ruger autoloaders.....Please dont ever speak in public again... If you wanna bash trash there are plenty of berettas and rugers to choose from just pick one.
  • armyscout
ALLEN,  i think perhaps you are just trolling. At no where, at NO time is the xd-45 "known" for failures to feed.  ".45 failure to feed" and "sensitive to limp wrist" in the same paragraph highly suggests the failure is in your application, not the weapon. NO weapon is designed to operate properly if you limp wrist the weapon  ( see books on Isaac Newton, Physics 101, gravity and Inertia are our friends, etc...)
As a veteran, PMC, and tactical competition shooter I can tell you that you will be shopping for a while if you try to find a better pistol than the Croatian HS200/ SA XD. period. You want it to feed?? Grip it properly. GLOCK wont feed from a limp wrist either, neither will your 3000 dollar les Baer /Wilson / Rock River super 1911. You want it to shoot sub-inch groups? quit shooting at cans with your drunk cousin, and go get some quality tactical training from a reputable source, and practice, practice, practice. 90% of the time it is not the weapon, it IS the shooter that is screwing up (regardless of the weapon).
On another note, I dont know a single cop that would be dumb enough to carry his duty weapon or OFF-DUTY weapon in condition 3.
No bullet in chamber= hollow handled hammer.
LOL one more thing ( a personal menacing gripe)  HANDGUNS DO NOT FIRE "SHELLS" NOR ARE THEY FED BY "CLIPS".
ROUNDS, CARTRIDGES, AMMO ETC... WILL DO BUT NOT "SHELLS".  HANDGUNS ARE FED BY MAGAZINES...SAY IT WITH ME M-A-G-A-Z-I-N-E-S. IF YOU ARE RELOADING IN A GUNFIGHT,AND YOU FIND YOURSELF RELOADING WITH CLIPS 1. YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD. 2. YOU FOUND YOUR PAPPY'S OL'RIFLE 3. YOUR IN A CHEEZY VIETNAM MOVIE WITH A RICE HAT ON YOUR HEAD.

    THANK YOU, THAT IS ALL.
    CARRY ON.
The guys leaving the negative comments most probably cant shoot anyway
  • Jeff,

I'm going to have to check out "Thunderwear" now.

I purchased an XD40 SubCompact and I love it. I sold my Glock 27 about 6 months ago, and was sorry I ever got rid of it...until I held this little beauty. I am more accurate and faster with this weapon than I was with the G27. I love the ease of breakdown and cleaning. I carry concealed using Thunderwear. It is an awesome holster that allows me to carry no matter what I wear.

Still shooting the XD Sub Compact .40 S&W and use it as my off duty weapon. Still no Jams! Easy to tear down and clean!....especially for those of you who avoid this needed procedure.

I still prefere an H&K as a Duty Weapon, however, for those of you who have had the opportunity to combat shoot and re-load, shooting at multiple targets...this is a nice piece.

I have been shooting Firearms since I was 9. I am now 29, and I am purchasing a new gun today. Most of the 1911's I was looking at are quiet pricey. I noticed the 45 XD and it caught my attention. After my research, I have come to the conclusion that the XD is the route I am choosing. Going today after work!
  • So, did you ever buy the XD, Trevor? Last January, I bought a Glock 22 with tritium sights for $499.95, $541 and change out the door. I believe the vendor had the 23 at the same price, but I wanted a full size pistol.

All the XDs I saw were going for about $550 before tax without night sights. I feel guilty about not contributing to my distant cousins in Croatia, but not an extra two hundred bucks (for night sights and sales tax) worth. The Glock is now my primary home defense weapon. Glocks really do rock.
  • Your personal test is a pretty good one skoolzone. Of course, at some point, you're going to have to clean it.
  • skoolzone
My friend bugged me until i sold him my xd compact 45. I wanted somthing smaller to carry, and found the 40 sub compact . I believe it is a very reliable carry weapon, and i carry it daily. Very accurate , functional, compact . Heck what more can i say .... over 1500 rounds through it . Oh yea , this will piss everybody off, my own little twisted personal test ... i haven't cleaned it yet. Oh crap here comes the rhetoric! Yeeeehaaaaa! Go for it , buy it , you will not be dissapointed.
  • Allen
I have owned the XD .40C then traded it for the XD .45 service model when it came out. I will say this gun is very accurate however it is known for failure to feeds, mine personally will fail 2-3 times in 200 rounds. this is with 3 different magazines and various manufactured 230 grain target loads. I have sent it in to springfield were they said they adjusted the extractor however the problem still exists. The .45ACP seems to be very sensitive to limp wristing also, my glock 21 (.45 5") has never failed, I personally wouldnt trust the XD in .45ACP as a duty or carry gun. Just my experiances.....
  • Alan
I've owned a XD in 9mm for several years now. I bought it for self and home protection. One night a couple of years ago, my wife said she heard our dog parking alot outside. I got my XD and a big flashlight and went outside to see what was going on with my dog. I stood about 20 yards from the pen and shined the flashlight into his pen. My dog was standing in his pen parking, the door of the pen was open. The next thing I knew he stood up and locked his front legs around a black bear already standing up in his pen. They started growling and biting each other. I raised my XD in my right hand and flashlight in the left, yelled my dogs name. As he started to come down to all fours, I fired one shot, hitting the bear in the chest. He started to run out of the pen and as I was stepping backwards fired again and hit him in the head. The bear dropped halfway out the doorway dead. 2 shots both one handed is all it took. I just purchased a .40 cal XD, but haven't fired it yet. Can't wait.

I've had the 4 inch model for like 2 years now. I dont shoot it an awful lot, but when I do I put atleast 200 rnds per visit thru it. I dont clean it as much as I should either.
So far no jams and multiple different kinds of loads. I can send 13 shots thru this thing without any flaw all the time.
    Awesome gun for the money.
My friend has all top dollar guns and always wants to shoot my XD
  • Tony
I love the way the sub compact XD feels. It is easier to conceal and I shoot better with this than my duty weapon Glock 22.
  • Joel
I have the XD-40 sub compact, and I have fired around 3000 rounds of range ammo, reloads, walmart winchester target ammo, and I have never had a single jam.
In my humble opinion the XD is superior to the Glock because Springfield used the best features of Glock and incorporated the best features of the 1911 into one gun. The grip safety gives me a lot of confidence when carrying everyday.
  • I have always been an H&K person until I purchased my XD Sub Compact .40 S&W.
Now I now give a thumbs up to both of these guns.

I really like the safety features on my Springfield and the fact that I can rub my finger across the top of the gun to check if their is a round in the chamber, this is a great feature.

For a small compact, I am able to keep my patterns very tight, and the control of this super gun is better than a compact Glock or H&K.

I am still an advocate of the H&K as a duty weapon, for an off duty weapon, the XD Sub Compact .40 S&W is hard to beat!

I feel sorry for Jake Mank #10 on the list he must have gotten an abused XD or it was never cleaned correctly. I have been carrying my XD-40 for quite some time as a duty weapon. I have never had a misfire-stovepipe or any other problems with it. As a matter of fact i bought a second one to carry off duty this was done so that i could have 2. I am not a big fan of the Glock but credit must be given where credit is due they are also a nice weapon.I am now looking at the XD-45 this is also a nice weapon. My buddy has the sub-compact 9mm and him and i go to the range and fire off around 200-300 rounds each and no problems. All right guy's this might hurt a little but those of you that are having problems try squeezing your grip a little harder and you will have less misfires and stovepipes. My wife has also fired the 9mm the.40cal and the 45. and has never once had a problem so come on guy's get a grip and you will do fine. I highly recommend this weapon.Good luck to all.

I shot the XD, the grip is nice and small, could use one of those rubber band wrap around grips, that would be perfect. Trigger is the best out of the box ever. Got great shot groups with the .40 cal. I want to buy one!

I currently own the XD-45 compact, XD-9 subcompact and the XD-40 subcompact. I've owned them for a few months and shoot about 500 rounds a weekend through each.
I love the XD-40 and carry it every day in an OTWB paddle holster. When I was first breaking the XD-40 in, it locked to the rear quite often, but that was because my thumb was hitting the slide lock. Once I determined this was the problem and changed my grip, no problems.
Of the thousands of rounds I've fired through the XD-40 (for that matter all of my XD's) other than the above mentioned problem, I haven't had a single failure.
I've owned Kimber, Tarus and Glock and several 1911's but have recently sold all of them except my Springfieeld Armory matchgrade 1911 because the XD is such a great pistol.
  • Ben
I've gone over the three thousand round mark with my XD40 tatical. Have not had any jams. Great gun.

Read some comments saying that it recoils less than a glock 26. Not true. They may both have double recoil springs ala Khar (the best to conceal shoot and handle in a metal frame, for my size) but the xd has a higher barrel axis, ie sitting higher on top of your hand. I had the xd9. it did not shoot better than my glock. Its a good gun in 9mm, robust, natural pointer, good trigger, but its at home because its bulkier and heavier with no real advantages over the g26.

I have a XD .40 I haven't found anything to not like about it. A very sweet shooter and a good carry gun.

Thanks guys for all the info.Currently have money down on XD40 sub compact.Someone was right when they said their hard to find in Texas. My brother-in-law bought XD9 and loves it.This gun is a bargain for what comes with it and with 2 kids the safety features are a plus. Thanks again for the comments.

Re: Bart Stevens May 30,2006. I have the same problem you had with my sub-compact shooting to the left. My rear sight is definately off center to the left. An officer friend told me it probably could be tapped over as there are no obvious signs of locations to adjust it. What is the toll you used? Thank you for your comments regarding other guns. I own a Ruger .45 and an eaa .40. both are excellend weapons and shoot great. The .45 however is a little too laarge for my hand and is too large too conceal. the .40 fits perfect but still too large too conceal. My xd 40 sub-compact, which i too fell in love with after going through the 1st 3 mags, is perfect for me in fit and concealment. give Texas a big howdy froma PA Texan.
To Trevor in Iraq. (March 1,2006)Thank you sincerely for your service. You deserve and xd!
Those looking for the xd's should look to Cabella's. Harrisburg, PA location had a load.

Commenting on comment #2 re. the Taurus 24/7. It does have a "single action double action" - good description. Try one and you'll see. The striker is typically pre-cocked by the action of the slide and has a light "single action" pull. If it doesn't go bang for some reason, like a light strike or hard primer, another squeeze of the trigger, more of a "double-action" pull since the striker isn't pre-cocked, will strike the primer again. This multiple strike capability is one of the best features of the pistol, IMO and should be copied immediately by Glock, Kahr, and Springfield - all of which only allow the first strike. If that doesn't work, the slide has to be racked manually to recock the striker.

    For the record...

I am a law enforcement officer. My father is a law enforcement officer, My brother is a law enforcement officer... My uncle is a law enforcement officer, most of our friends are law enforcements officers... I think you get the point.

In the many years of being associated with LEO's, I have seen a few that don't carry a loaded and charged semi-auto. On the other hand, I can't say I have ever heard of an agency that required their officers to carry their semi-auto weapon without a round chambered. I think the general consensus on that would be that a LEO should always be ready to defend himself or others and that ability would be greatly diminished if he first had to charge his weapon before being able to respond to a threat. But those I mentioned earlier prefer not to carry charged weapons because they feel safer around their own kids, or other people’s kids, and the public in general. They figure if someone was to get their weapon from them, or come across their uncharged weapon, by the time that person realized that the weapon failed to fire, their spare could be drawn, they could be well out of harms way, or disarm the individual by then. However, I do not agree with this mindset. BE PREPARED!

Now to the XD: I fired an XD40 Two-Tone 4" today and fell deeply in love with the weapon. I shot a tighter grouping with it than any other weapon I have ever shot besides my dad's Colt 1911 .45 ACP Competition Series (I nornmally shoot a 117-120 out of 120 on the course).

We put over 200 reloaded rounds through the XD40 with one (1) malfunction (failure to feed). Comparatively, I would have had maybe two or three (2 or 3) of the same type failures through my Sig P226 (Duty) with the same amount of rejacketed rounds. I found the trigger pull to be smooth and consistent and the weapon felt very comfortable in my hands. On the downside, I still have the red mark on my thumb from the massive recoil generated by the XD earlier today. Actually, shooting the gun was not fun. The score it produced, on the other had, made it worth it. I am now looking to try a XD9 SUB to possibly carry as a backup/off duty weapon. When I find one and fire it, I'll let you all know.
  • Jack MacCarty
"Brian, you say you’re an officer - does that mean military, or police? Frankly, I don’t think that you’re either from the comments you posted. Both LEOs and Military Police/Security Forces carry loaded and chambered. I’ve worked for both. I recently did a tour with the Security Forces squadron at my base, and we carried the M9 (of couse), loaded with hollowpoints, round in the chamber, safety OFF but hammer de-cocked. I guess that’s necessary when protecting $30M fighter aircraft, but I didnt for one second feel unsafe doing it. We had a 30 foot standoff distance for persons armed with edged weapons - if I had to draw my sidearm, all I needed to do was pull the trigger. Police officers also carry with a round in the chamber."
    Comment by JB — December 28, 2006 @ 7:58 pm

Are you so sure that all police are required to carry their service weapon chambered? From what I understand... State to state, precinct to to precinct, rules, can and do, change from time to time....

Lets try to keep an objective mind while posting, eh?

    Hey folks,

Good discussion. I bought a XD 40 sub-compact for CCW about two weeks ago and absolutely love it. So far, I've only put 300 rounds through it but have had absolutely no problems. It was a toss-up between the Glock 30 and the XD, and after having fired my dad's Glock 30 and merely handling the XD, I was completely won over by the way it felt in my hand as compared to the Glock, which, by the way, is a fine weapon. . . .in fact, I think that for my next purchase (once I remove my testicles from my wife's purse where she has kept them since I bought a new gun without consulting her), I'll probably get a Glock 29 just to try out the 10mm. Heck, to be honest, I have't encountered too many handguns that I haven't liked, so maybe I'm not the most discriminating shooter.

What surpised me most is the fact that on my second trip to the range, I shot the XD nearly as well as I shot my 1911 (which is still my favorite, but a little unwieldy for concealment as a full-frame). I feel confident enough with the XD's safety features to carry it ready to fire, but I find myself flicking a phantom thumb safety whenever I do draw and fire drills. The fact that any police dept. would prefer the Israeli draw truly frightens me b/c in a stressful situtation, I see the potential for a negligent discharge by those who are not exceptionally well-trained in drawing in this fashion, and I or my kid might be in the vicinity of such a ND one day. FWIW, I am not a police officer.
  • Shenard
I have the XD9 SC and it's the best gun I've ever shot or owned. It's so comfortable & easy to grip, my aim is much better on this gun than any other gun. I also have a glock & S&W 9mm but this is my gun of choice.
  • Dan
I bought a XD40 service model about a year ago, great gun. The only problem I have had with it was that the rear sight was a little off, but nothing a brass punch and a several rounds couldn't fix. Other than that, I have put around 4,000 rounds through it (several brands of factory loads), consistently accurate, and has never jammed. I have heard alot of people complaining about the use of multiple safeties (grip + trigger), but if you know how to handle a gun, you will not even notice them.
  • Steve B.
Just purchased a new XD40 sub from the Gun Show at Dulles Expo Center in Virginia for $459.00, which included the pistol pack (case packed full of goodies). Considered several compacts for upgrading my primary CCW carry from an old but reliable S&W .38 Snubnose. Final deciding factor over several makes considered....XD40 most comfortable and very natural grip feel. I actually feel in control of the weapon, not "adapting" to it's grips. First box of rounds were Federal .40 S&W (FBI Load) - no problems at all. Right out of the box, I was amazed at the XD40's accuracy, stability, natural point and aim ability, and the smoothness of the action on recoil, (very smooth and light in my opinion). I loved shooting my Barretta 92F for years, but the XD40 was simply a pleasure to shoot and conceals very easily! Not only did I shoot better than expected for a sub-compact, even my 74 yr old father (Korean War Marine), who is not "into" guns, took it for a test fire with me this weekend and shot an impressive group (half dollar size) at 25'. His basic marksmanship knowledge served him well, the XD40 delivered the confidence he deserved!
  • jon
If you look up the springfield armory website you will see that they have a selection of xd's that have ported barrels for less recoil- I will hopefully be buying one shortly!
  • Brian F.
JB - Thanks for the post. I think I'll be moving to the XD40. One other post I'd read on Packing.org suggested looking into a 40 barrel as the slides and frame were the same, that would be good if the cost were comparable, but I think given the need to choose I'll be moving up 1 cal. Thanks for your input.

    ~Brian

Brian, I've shot the G27 and the XD40. Haven't shot the XD9, but have fired many 9mm guns. Yes, the G27 is a hand cannon. I don't care for it either. The XD40, while a bit zippier than any 9mm would be, is very managable. Target reaquisition is very fast, especially compared to the G27 because of the (in my opinion) better grip angle.
  • Brian F.
Does anyone have any first hand info on the comparison between the XD9sub and the XD40sub in terms of recoil and acurracy? I have the XD-9 as one of my ccw weapons, and despite the short barrel, I find it to be extremely acurrate, even well beyond any range at which one should reasonably expect to defensively engage an adversary. While a 9mm with the proper ammo config is certainly capable of stopping an offender, I would prefer a larger round with higher stopping power. Shot a friend's Glock 27 and didn't care for the recoil. Not that it was excessive, but it was far "snappier" than the XD-9, or even a Springfield 1911 .45. Just not smooth at all and more difficult to resight for follow-on shots. Considering moving to the XD-40, has anyone fired all three? (XD9, XD40, Glock-27) who would be willing to provide a comparison? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Brian.

Sorry, I'm going back a couple of posts to add my .02 regarding carrying without a round in the chamber.

Brian, you say you're an officer - does that mean military, or police? Frankly, I don't think that you're either from the comments you posted. Both LEOs and Military Police/Security Forces carry loaded and chambered. I've worked for both. I recently did a tour with the Security Forces squadron at my base, and we carried the M9 (of couse), loaded with hollowpoints, round in the chamber, safety OFF but hammer de-cocked. I guess that's necessary when protecting $30M fighter aircraft, but I didnt for one second feel unsafe doing it. We had a 30 foot standoff distance for persons armed with edged weapons - if I had to draw my sidearm, all I needed to do was pull the trigger. Police officers also carry with a round in the chamber.

I'm going to be purchasing an XD40 in a couple of days to use as my primary duty weapon for a law enforcement agency I was recently hired onto. I'll post my comments after I fire it, but I can say that after only holding it, I was sold. It points very naturally, and it is very comfortable to hold.

Mike, the grip safety doesnt bother me in the slightest, either. It fully depresses when the gun is properly held, so it shouldn't be and issue when firing unless you limp-wrist the gun - and if you do that, the gun wont fire! If you're concerned about it, try to find a range that has a rental XD and try it out. I doubt you'll be bothered by it when shooting, but every person is different. Good luck!

I have the XD service model 9mm. It is a great gun and I would recommend it to anyone. I like it so muck that I am getting the XD .40 subcompact. I like the extended clip and if it performs like my 9mm I will be more than satisfied. I frequent the range and have shot most of the 9mm that are available to rent. I think the springfield XD shoots the best!
  • Rob
I own the XD .45ACP and I have pumped about 1000 rounds through it.. Never jammed and is very smooth straight out of the box.
  • MGB
I am trying to buy an XD40 sub compact and cannot find one. I have heard Springfield is sold out for several months. Does anyone know where to buy one in Texas?
  • Marvin
I have shot Fiocci 9mm, 40 and 45 in XD and XD SC for 5 years and have never had a failure of the ammo or the pistol. I would not have anything but SA XD pistols. They just work.
  • Michael
I just wanted to add my 2 cents to the forum. I bought the xd 40 just about 4 months ago and I LOVE IT. I've put somewhere around 1200 rounds through it so far with not even a hint of trouble. Accuracy is excellent, and it is just a pure joy to fire. I've been around guns my whole life and have fired more handguns than I can count "20+ years in the military helped" and the XD is by far the best. Glocks can't even compare. EXCELLENT WEAPON.
  • Joe
I have owned my XD-40 sub-compact for over a year and it is by far the finest weapon I've owned. I have ran over 1500 rds through it and have never had a jam. If you want it as your carry weapon I wouldn't buy the tricked out package with the light and the 12 rd mag as I have trouble concealing it with the extended mag in. Save 50 bucks and skip the light as the only thing I have ever used it for was a time my power went out! Also if your a novice I don't think you will find an easier weapon to maintain. You can completely strip it in about 15 seconds. All in all if you have the need buy an XD pistol! I also own a service model XD-9 and once again after nearly 2000 rds through that one not a single jam.

just wanted to say how much i love the XD .40cal net to the colt python this is my favorite pistol to shoot i even started carrying the XD40 in stead of my Berretta its just more comfterble and you cant go wrong with a .40 more stopping power and it can get through walls and windows without more than one round unlike the 9mm
  • patrick
i recently bought the XD40 .40cal and love it i hope the army goes back to the .45 because the 9mm is not living up to standards on the battle field

    New XD-45ACP COMPACT:
Springfield has just come out with a XD 45ACP "Compact", which maintains the 4" bbl of the service model, but chops the butt by 3/4". Almost exact size of a Glock 19/23, but a 10 shot 45ACP. They also have the XDGear Mag/grip extentions for it, so you can use full size 45ACP mags in it and grip 3 fingers instead of two. 3/4 " shorter butt might not seem like much, but it really makes a big dif. when carrying around all day. The longer bbl. reduces felt recoil and increases practical accuracy, so it might be a real nice solution for those wanting both a CCW carry gun and a duty gun all in one.

    9MM vs 40CAL:
As for which caliber to go with for the XD-SC, I have the .40, the girlfriend has the 9mm. If you're a girl, have girlish proportions, are new to shooting, or are going to burn through 200 rounds a weekend in IDPA shoots, go with the 9mm. Otherwise, the 40 Cal wins in my book. It has the better balistics by about 20% and regardless of the age old debate of calibers, 20% more energy is a better thing to have than not. Of course, you pay for it in recoil (I'd say you feel that 20% in increased recoil over the 9mm), but it's not so much as to slow me down in speed or accuracy for 7 yard double taps, so I think it's good to go for for a seasoned shooter.

    AMMO NOTE:
If you are going to carry Cor-bon ammo in the XD-SC's, make sure and fire them as your first mag durring each range visit... they are significantly more snappy then the Winchester White Box from Walmart you brought to train with (about an extra 30-40% over that White Box), so you should get used to that snap by shooting it first off.
  • Michael
I just purchased the xd 40 4" service model and took it to the local range yesterday for the first time. I put just over 200 rounds through it with no sign of any problems at all. As far as being accurate you can't beat it. Great weapon.
I carry "or carried" a Ruger P95 9mm for several years and it looks like it's been replaced.
As far as recommendations you can't do much better than the XD 40. After you get your hands on one you'll be hooked.
  • Zak
I'm in the market for a handgun to be used for home protection and range. What is the recommended way of getting my hands on one? Should I go pick one up at the local shop, or search around? Anyone with some insight would be great to hear from. I'm a rifle and shotgun owner, but I am new to purchasing handguns. Would you also recommend a 9 or 40?
    Thanks

Now to comment on my new XD-45 w/4" barrel. WOW! I held one at a gun show a couple weeks ago and was immediately impressed with its balance, the fact if had ambidexterous mag release. (Being left handed, it is nice to see a manufacturer go the extra mile to make me feel that as a significant minority in the world population, my needs are importaint.) ()-: It feels even better with a fully loaded clip! I had decided that a 45 would be my choice for personal defense and a relative suggested I look into Springfield. I had not yet done a lot of research and therefore wasn't ready to make a desicion. But about an hour later I went back to the table with the XDs and picked up the 45 again. It felt natural in my hand. The gun shop owner must have remembered me from earlier and said let me make you a deal on that. And that he did!

I have only put about 300 rounds through it so far -- Wolf 230gr. FMJ, Blazer 230gr. FMJ and Federal HydraShock 185gr. Thus far, no misfires or jams. I have yet to test the Hornady 185gr. JHP/XTP round for personal defense purposes. I also want to test a couple more brands of FMJ for practice. But at this point, Wolf holds the lead for price and reliability.
  • James
Kevinc46205 asked about ammo for personal/home protection and range shooting. My opinion is that you should not use FMJ for personal/home protection. It is fine for practice. However, if you NEED to stop an attacker, the bullet must expand and not pass through the criminal. I have an XD-45 and the retired police officer at the gun shoppe recommended Hornady JHP/XTP for defense. The Federal HydraShock is also a good defense round according to a conceal carry instructor I know. I have fired this round a few times and saw the expansion, it was impressive. I have not fired any Hornady yet, but I will next time I practice. A quality weapon is only part of the equation; quality ammo is the other part -- it is probably more importaint. When it comes to protecting your loved ones and yourself, $25.00 for 50 rounds of ammo that will put down an attacker isn't too much.
  • Jay
I am currently deciding between the sub-compact XD .40 and 9mm. Having tried them both out at my local range I am leaning towards the 9mm.

The .40 rental gun jammed on me about 4 to 5 times during 50 rounds. No problems with the 9mm. Granted it just probably needed a clean, but from what I have read the .40 XD is less reliable, and perhaps .40 ammo is less accurate in general.

For me the sub-compact will be my first carry pistol, as I have signed up for a CCW class.

I am far more accurate shooting a 1911, even compact 1911's, but due to the weight I lose that edge after shooting for a while.

It appears that most of the people posting here prefer the .40. Can someone post why they prefer this for personal defense.

    Thanks,
    Jay.

Just shot my XD-40 Service Model (4" barrel) for the first time yesterday - fantastic side arm! I was concerned about moving away from my BHP .40 to a 'plastic gun' because of the trigger. I never took to the glock trigger or the over all feel of them. The XD-40 is distinicly different from the glock and the trigger is great. Mine only has 150 rounds throught it, but so far I'm pleased.
  • Have put 800 rounds in my new SpringField XD9 service and have had zero issues.
It's the Glock on Crack! I love it as my all in one sidearm.
I have shot and own alot of hand guns, Walther, Sig, Glock, Colt, Ruger and my favorite to date is the XD. They took what works from other guns and put it all into one.... :)
  • Dominic
Oh and I almost forgot, some of you who are really amped about the .40 S&W calibers but aren't too hip to the .45 ACP chambering, I'd like for you to remember that Springfield has just recently created an XD pistol with the new Glock chambered .45 round. It's the Springfield XD .45 GAP, which I haven't shot yet but would really like to. I've read all the reviews and its a far easier load to control than that of your typical .45 ACP.
  • Dominic
I have owned my XD-40 for a little over a year now and I absolutely love it. I just cleaned it for the first time a few days ago and have never had any problems with it. It did end up jamming one time when I attempted to shoot some of my cousins PCI rounds out of it. I've found that this weapon really prefers steel jacketed Wolf rounds, Hydra-shock Federal, Safety slugs, and reloads where there is no indentation between the bullet and the casing. It has to be smooth all the way down fellas. Aside from its slightly touchy attitude towards ammo I love my XD. In fact, I love it so much when I move to Arizona and join the police department, I'm going to ask if I can use an XD for carrying. Furthermore I love the way this weapon feels in my hands when firing it. Completely balanced, completely comfortable, and completely whole-heartedly accurate. This gun is being compared to the Glock for a reason gentleman. I've owned Glocks and they're very reliable but I prefer the XD. There's a reason this thing was handgun of the year for 2003 and 2004.

I have a Kimber target II and an ultra-carry, and a warthog. I am now thiinking about getting the xd 45 tactical (5 in) and the one thing that really bothered me
about just holding it in my hand at the store, was the grip safety. If I could feel it just holdiing it at the store, and it bothered me, what is it going to feel like when
alot of pressure is coming back into my palm?

The grip safetys on a 1911 style are formed in such a way that I never notice them, not the case with the xd.

I had bought a Glock 40 cal and brought it back, it felt uncomfortable in my hands and with the weather being cold, it hurt to fire...some of that could be that thte 40 cal is such a higher pressure round then a .45

Id appreciate any comments on me buying the xd 45 5inch please be sent to
    ocean1955@sbcglobal.net

    Thanks

QUOTE* Jeff….no it is not….I am an Officer and you should not carry a charged weapon….you can charge within a second and ready to fire….think SAFETY…you already knew that though. I carry loaded, but not charged. *END QUOTE

What utter rubbish. If you don't have a round in the chamber then all you have is a rather unwieldy club. Of course you should have a round in the chamber! On the XD you have redundant safteys, the gun isn't going to jump out and shoot soone on it's own. Think of a situation where you might need to use a gun, do you really think that you can unholster the gun, rack the slide (requires both hands usually), and then aquire a sight picture and fire quick enough?
It has been shown that inside 21 feet if an attacked has a knife and the victim has a gun holstered (with a round in the chamber), it is incredibly unlikley that the victim will be able to even get the gun into position before he is mortally wounded by the attacker with the knife.
The ONLY time I could even concieve carrying without a round in the chamber is maybe if you pocket carried a GLOCK 26 and were VERY proficient with the Israeli Style draw.
The fact that the MORON I quoted CLAIMS to be an officer means nothing. Even if he was an officer, most cops really don't know much about guns and only shoot when they need to qualify (There are surely exceptions, but quite a few fit the aforementioned steriotype).
This is the most important advice I can give to a gun newbie,
    GUNS ARE NOT SAFE
THE ONLY REAL SAFTEY IS YOUR BRAIN!
That said, remember the 4 rules of firearms saftey (google it if you don't know)
and keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you are ready to fire and yoiu should be ok.~Nathan

I've owned my XD-45 for a few months now, and could not possibly be happier. Had a Kimber gov't 45, and thought I would regret losing the crisp trigger and inherent accuracy of that setup. Not at all. This thing is a tack-driver, and I can throw lots more bullets at the target before reloading. I'm going on 400 rounds w/o cleaning, and no problems. I can't seem to find ammo this gun doesn't like. I've never had a misfeed. Went to the range with a buddy who was ragging on me for buying a "plastic gun," and shut him up when I put 14 rounds in a 3 inch square at 15 yards faster than he could unload his wheel-gun. I don't have big hands, and Glocks always felt like I was holding a 2x4. This The gun points well, probably due to the fact that it shares the same grip angle as the 1911, so when you bring it to bear on the target, you are already aligned and ready to roll. It shoots very straight, has a nice trigger, and is more concealable, in my opinion, than my Kimber was. I'm just waiting for Springfield to do a sub-compact in 45 for my ankle rig, and I'll be happy.

SPRINGFIELD XD .45 IS TEST FIRED AND GOOD TO GO
Accuracy I will give it a Grade A
Fired 230 Grn Fiocci (Italy) without a hiccup right out of the box.
Only (1) bad point and it isn't bad.
Watch the muzzle flip right off of the first bang.
Can't really call it flip though, it is more of a straight climb, the weapon will raise about 45 degrees up and you will be shooting over the berm on your second shot.
However if you fight with it you can keep it about 10 degrees, maybe 15 degrees up and on the second and consecutive shots bring it down.
This piece is really, really, really nice.
Fired 14 rounds of the ACP is like butter once you learn how to control it.
I would strongly recommend a two hand grip.
I am more than happy that I bought this weapon it is now like maybe my most favorite gun of all I am thinking.
Had my friend fire it but he is still thinking of the Smith and Wesson M and P and I am trying to convice him to go with the XD series because I like them so much and you really do get a heck of a lot for your money.

I recently purchased the XD9 sub and today shot my first competition pistol match using both it and my regular weapon. Prior to the match I had been discussing the 2 guns I brought with the RSO, and mentioned that I didn't expect to shoot nearly as well with the XD as with my Sig, which I have carried and exercised for 10 years. After running both weapons through a full production pistol match, the RSO used my scores to validate the fact that my new weapon, with which I have very little experience, performed noticeably better than the one I have had for many years, carried in combat and put a great many rounds through. Maybe it was a quirk, but the trigger is great, and the hammerless SA first shot makes things very smooth and easy. No m/f's so far after 400 or so rounds, and I have been very happy with it. Will probably buy the .40 as well if this gun continues to perform as well as it has so far as a leisure/range wepaon. No complaints whatsoever. I'm pretty impressed.

I bought an XD40 sub-compact in July 2006. I have shot 500 rds through this weapon and have had no mal-functions whatsoever. I am new to CCW and pistols in general for that matter. But, I am retired military so I have been exposed to weapons for years. IS it common to carry your semi-auto with a round in the chamber?
  • ROGUE
Just bought the XD.45 because I have had the XD .40 full size (not the tactical) for some time. I am also a huge Glock fan but the shootability and the reliability of my USED XD .40 is incredible. (bought it used but vg shape by someone who just didnt like it) The weapon fires even the cheapest ammo that will clog a Glock. Yep, hard to believe the XD is actually more reliable and cheaper than the Glock. Had a friend of mine shoot the XD and the first time he picked it up he was blasting all the rounds into the x ring at 25 yards unsupported.
These weapons are awesome and I hope that my .45 is no exception. If it behaves exactly like the .40 then I will probably purchase the 9mm XD as well so that I have the whole series. Great to shoot and I am sure self defense fans will love the 45 chambering. I still do love my gLOCK BUT THERE IS plenty of room for the XD, and it is very well made as well.
  • Kevinc46205
I have just purchased an XD9 (my first pistol). Does anyone have any thoughts on high quality/low cost ammunition? Reloads are out of the question. Primary use is personal/home protection. Secondary use is range shooting. I think I would prefer FMJ, but could be talked into something else.

Steve has already posted "I have had good results with Winchester and Hydro-Shock shells. Never under any circumstances fire Filoci (Fiocchi)... They do not hold the correct tolerances and it will jam every time."
  • John713
I bought the XD 45 ACP Tactical this morning. We have been shooting one at the range that I work at for several weeks and have fired over 4500 rounds without cleaning it.We have only oiled it once and used mixed ammo, ball, hollow points and frangible.NO MALFUNCTIONS of any kind yet.I was very impressed with the way it felt in my hand and the price was great.

I went to the gunstore to buy a Ruger .45 P90 or the special edition P90TH. I changed my mind when I held the two-tone XD-45. Light, compact, and it holds 13 rounds one in the hole. It also came with alot of accessories. Excellent pistol. If you don't have one, trust me. Get one of the XD models!!!

I purchased the 5" tactical model to carry when I go hunting out here in West Texas and to to carry in my truck when i am on the road. This is the first handgun that i have ever owned. It took me approximately 2 yrs to find the right gun. In it I have found for me the perfect pistol. I am currently in the USAF and have fired the M-9. I tried pretty much every model of handgun in this class and finally decided on this one. For me it was all about the fit and comfort since .40S&W was what i had chose for the caliber. round after round i have shot through this pistol so far no problems accurate reliable and comfortable to shoot. For me no finer pistol exist. I will stake my life and my families lives on it.\
  • I love the XD-40. I use it as a CCW and practice with all of the time. Out of the box, it is the best that you can get....
  • CC Coleman
I just bought the XD45 Service. Big gun and that was what I was going for. I beg to differ - the grip is a copy of the CZ75, not the 1911. It has less weight loaded than my CZ PCR 9mm. The trigger is telepathic - think about pulling it after you have shot conventional double actions for years and the shot is away. Will not need to push the slide in while reholstering to ensure it does not push out of battery. It points well and can make a can dance with instinct firing. This is my first polymer pistol as I am kind of a ludite and have been holding out for something other than the Glock. The Glock does not fit well and it does not do justice to the 45ACP in their rendering of it. The trigger is almost too smooth and light for me - wish they would come out with a NY Trigger or heavier trigger for us old 9mm Euro gun DA guys. I've noticed this gun is more forgiving to carry - that plastic is soft compared to metal to the skin or shirts or IWB carry. Wish the US Military would adopt a pistol like this rather than the HK after the Beretta has it's run. Can't wait to get a SC in this same caliber.

I have been a *GLOCK* fan forever. As long as I can remember. I have owned the Glock 21. Glock 30, and now the Glock 27, Never a problem with any of them, and quite frankly the Glock 30 saved my life on a camping trip, but that story is for another forum. I walked into the local range the other day, and was inquiring to what is new and hot these days. Ummmmmm I guess I have been a little busy or under a rock. Kevin showed me a Springfield XD .40, and told me to go return some lead to the earth. I NOW AM 1 GLOCK SHORT IN MY COLLECTION....I traded my 27 on the spot....NIce case...Mag pouch x2 extended 2nd mag...What a wonderful tool Springfield has created. I live in Arizona so its shorts and sandals..Im not large as a man about 5ft 5 and thats pushing it...But with the right baggiee T-shirt I have carried the weapon for a month in a IWB holster..Only time I was busted was when *my wife caught me removing it before entering and establishment that served booze...My CCW permit was born to carry this gun.....I wont even go into how well the weapon shot.....Run dont walk to get yours......

bought a xd-40 two weeks ago, my son a marine stopped at my house when it was pouring down rain. he wanted to try the xd-40 out any way so we fired over 300 rds. through it without a single malfuncion and i mean it was pouring down. i was in the army in nam in 68 and seen monsoon rains and this rain equaled it!we shot the cheapest ammo we could fine, american eagle and umc brands. i also bought a smith and wesson 40 mp but cant get it yet because of the law but as soon as i get it i am going to compare it to the xd-40!

Just bought an XD-40 and took it out to the range. Loved it. Very comfortable and easy to fire. Even had my son try it out and he's never fired a weapon before and he was center of mass about 60% of the time. Highly recommend it as an option.

I've owned Kimber, glock and colt defender subcompacts.I've got a Les Baer Commanche and love it.A friend told me to get the XD.Damn! Throw the Glock out, heave the Defender, and ditch the Kimber. cause this gun feels great in your hand and does it shoot!Where have I been, this thing is fun to shoot.Put the Streamlight TLR-2 on it and what a gun.I'm impressed.

I recently traded a SW40VE for the XD.40, and I love it. It has a little stronger recoil, but the gun is so balanced that it don't matter.
  • Michael
I have been a huge Glock fan, and own more than I actually "need", but guns are like that.
I bought one of the new XD .45ACP Service models, and was so impressed with it that I went back and bought a .40 Subcompact. I have been carrying a Glock 27 for several years, but I find that that I prefer the Springfield Sub. It feels better in the hand, and shoots great. The felt recoil actually seems milder with the Springfield than the Glock. Add the enhanced safety features of the XD, and I am now a convert to the Springfield side of the Force.
For concealed carry you can do a lot worse that the XD Sub, but you can't do much better.
(And after 200 rounds with no cleaning, no malfunctions of any sort with five different types of ammo.)

I have the XD40 Subcompact and it is great! I have only done 100 rounds of winchester and no jams, i carry it with hydro shocks though! Still trying to get the right size in the waist holster for it, i guess thats what happens when you order off the internet
  • Bart Stevens
I purchased an XD-40 sub-compact two days ago. Without cleaning the gun first, I took it to the range and put 400 rounds through it. I had no malfunctions or problems of any kind. I put some cheaper Winchester and Federal ammo through it (ball, not HP). I also put ten rounds of the Corbon self-defence loads (HP) through it. It handled all ammo without a problem. The only thing I had to do was adjust the rear sight. The pistol was shooting left and looking at the rear sight it was obviously not centered on the gun. Easily adjusted (with the proper tool), after which it shot very well for a short barreled pistol. So far I am very pleased with this gun, and so far it has not had any malfunctions. I find it interesting that there are some people who swear by one brand of gun only. I have owned many different brands that have been completely reliable and some brands that have not. Saying that only one brand of firearm is good is a bit silly, or the individual is just ignorant of other brands but feels obligated to promote the only brand he owns (being negative about others). Also, what fits one persons hand doesn't necessarily fit everyone. I will admit that there are some brands out there that I would not use for self-defence because I don't trust them to always work. I have found quality and reliability in Glocks (don't fit my hand well, but an excellent brand), and Sigs (very good line of guns, but I don't have any experience with their new polymer line). I would trust my life using the Sig's and Glocks that I have owned and own now. I found the small Tarus pistols (PT111 and the .40) to be not as reliable (occasional mis-feeds) as the Glocks and Sigs that I have owned. As in cars, I also believe that you can get a lemon no matter what brand you buy. It is unlikely to happen in the higher quality brands, but it can happen (even to Glocks, I have seen a bad one!). There are some brands (HK, etc..) out there that I have heard are very reliable, but I haven't had any experence with them. The fact that I have not had experence with them doesn't make them bad or not as good as the brands that I have owned. It just means that I don't know, and it would be stupid for me to say anything positive or negetive about them. For the ".45 (1911)only fans", I have an old 1911 that I love to shoot, but being 5' 7" and 160 lbs., it is impossible for me to carry concealed on my body except during the coldest winter days. I live in normally hot weather year round so I need a small light pistol. So far I am impressed with the quality and reliability of this XD-40 sub-compact. Lets see if I can hide this thing on my small body when the temps hit the upper 90s and 100s. I may have to hide the gun in my day-planner like I do the larger guns. Wear a fanny-pack in this part of Texas and I will stand out terribly. I can get away with a day-planner without drawing attention, but not a fanny pack. I bought this gun to hide on my person during the summer. We shall see.

Hey all, I recieved my SA XD-40 4" about 2 weeks ago. Brought her home, give her a quick cleaning and took her out on a date! I put close to 50 rds. through her just to break her in,.. But I know she was begging for more. She was flawless!!
The next weekend I went out to see what she's got for accuracy. Using a pistol bench rest and an Official NRA 50ft. Timed And Rapid Fire Pistol Target. With the above being said, you should know the distance to the target (50')! Just because I and a lot of my hand guns enjoy Speer Gold Dot Ammo, I went with that! .40 S&W 180gr. Gold Dots! Long story short.....SUPERB!!! CONSISTENTLY hitting 8,9,10, rings!!! Of course there were hits on the 6 and 7 rings, but that was my fault!
This is a pistol that is and has revolutionized the polymer handgun industry. GET ONE! You'll thank yourself.
  • GOOD CHOICE Trevor! Way to go...AIRBORNE!
  • Thanks fiveocommando, and everyone else. I've definitely decided on the SA XD 40 as my next purchase.

I have carried a Springfield XD9 subcompact as an off-duty and plain clothes weapon for the past two years. I have put several hundred rounds of varying types of ammunition through it in this time. I have had only a single malfunction in this time and it was related to a bad magazine. These guns are very reliable, rugged, and accurate. I wouldn't carry anything that I didn't feel 100% confident in since my life depends on it. On a personal note, I saw that someone recommended a Taurus PT series gun. I had a PT-111 9mm a few year back that I purhased with the intention of using as a off-duty and plain clothes duty weapon. The front sight fell off the gun, the feed ramp had a burr on it, the magazines rattled when loaded, and the gun would only shoot ball ammunition!! Needless to say I didn't keep that gun very long!!

I have a service model xd 40 and like it so much I just got the sub-c xd 9mm! You won't be disappointed with these guns they are the best. The mags are interchangeable and I can put about 17 rounds of 9mm in the 40mags! With the pierce grip plate for the sub 9 it fits in the hand nice and it's so small!! These are great guns. I have a Glock 21 also but I've never had a problem with the XD and have fired about 1000 rds throught the 40 w/out a single jam!!

i have this gun in a 9mm it has less recoil than the Glock 26
and it doesent beat you to death to shoot.. it accepts larger factory 16 round mags also

I have the .40SW 4" service model and love it. I'm picking up a .40SW 3" SC for a BUG. I'm planning to use them for duty weapons when I become a cop.

One note, in some places the 3" .40's are really hard to find, so if you see one and think you want it, I suggest you jump on it. I've been on a waiting list for months. If you want more info on these, check out http://www.hs2000talk.com/ or http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/index.php

regardless of which department's move to any particular type of gun other than Glock, we will always have the suspect outnumbered. Lastly, I have to say... "I'm gonna bet my life on any gun, it has to be a Glcok".

Best gun ever, mine came without the tac light, anyone got a spare one cheap?
  • James
    hey y'all,
i have owned my XD-40 for about six months. i have the service model. and i love it. it is the only firearm i own that i would trust to save my life, in that situation. i have put lots of hundreds of rounds through it and it is the best. got the whole package (3 mags, kydex holster, tac light, lock, case, and brush for under 600.00!!!! i was pleased and colse it over the glock for one reason. saftey features. the grip saftey, like the 1911 is the best idea on a plastic handgun i have ever seen. got kids, need saftey. but the gun safe it is in. i would not trade for anything.

I recently was in the market for a new gun. I wanted a reliable, easy to maintain, straight shooter. I found that in the XD-40. I also liked the fact that I could drop a 9mm barrel in it. Honestly, besides being a great gun, (Much better than a glock IMO, mainly because of the grip, trigger, and grip safety) one reason to consider the XD is that its following is growing by leaps and bounds. I was just at my local shop when I picked mine up and they told me that the XD's are out selling the glocks 2 to 1. This means that there will be more aftermarket products for them then the Taurus.

Point: buy the XD, its cheap and great!

i have a springfield xd-9mm subcompact. this is the most comfortable handgun around. so far i have no jams to report at the range (over 5000 rounds). great gun overall.
  • Michael
I have shot the .40 service model and loved it. I shot the .40 sub compact today and liked it more. The people that say bad things about this gun must have problems or are using some kind of crappy reloads. I have never heard of a problem with one of these untill this blog. Buy one. I plan on it.
  • Domonic
XD 9mm is a great allaround handgun!
I love the balance and the sights.
I have shot over 2000 rounds and no jams.
While at the range my shooting partner droped it in the mud (unloaded) and with a quick visual wipe down it shot over 200 rounds. That got my to get some balls and I submirged it in mud water loaded and it shot another 100 rounds with no problems!

Randall, while in the Armory, give the .40 version a try. I was going for the .45 but was advise against it, not because the gun, but the .45 ACP round itself.
  • Randall
I just bought the XD 45 ACP today and am far from impressed. The accuracy was dead on, but it jammed several times. This may have been a faulty mag, but that's no excuse for 8 jams out of only 100 rounds from a brand new pistol (and yes I cleaned it before shooting). Also, the handle is way too long; it felt fine in the store, but not when shooting. Finally, the extractor seems impossible to clean unless you tear down the pistol past what the warranty allows. I'm gonna trade it for a Glock 30 tomorrow morning. Been using a Glock 27 for a while now without any complaints.

sorry one more thing:i payed under 600 for XD40, 2 stainless 9 round clips, 1 XD Gear Extended Mag 12 rounds, XML light which is $100 by itself. case, lock. It is also the worlds smallest carry pistol.
  • Derek Monroe
i just bragged on my xd40, i have never shot a glock my cop buddy hs a couple, but a majority of police departments sre switching the XD series..their saying is "The Future of Handguns", sorry just pround of mine, i actualy have both my pistols next to me because i was going to check them out, since they pretty much stay in safe. I don't think you'll be dissappointed
  • Derek Monroe
I bought one about 8 months and love the heck out of it. my accuracy increased easily(i'm recreational), 3 of my buddies also had great comments about it. I love it; great investment. also have a ruger p89t special edition(1st pistol). Mine came with the XML(light), belt holster, 2 stainless 9 round clips and 1 XD gear extended mag that is 15 cap., and of course case, lock, brush.... Love it. I am certified concealed also.

I've fired every caliber of XD at my local range and had outstanding results with all of them. Especially the 9mm and the .45 ACP. The grip angle is the same as the 1911 and much more natural for me than any Glock. The safety features are unobtrusive and work very well. I have noticed that in every discussion forum I look at there is only one bad review. Maybe there's something to those, but after putting hundreds of rounds through rental beaters at the range I'm satisfed that the XDs are supremely durable and accurate. I plan on buying the XD 9mm sub compact w/ the high capacity mag as well as the 4" .45 ACP that just came out. The new .45 ACP holds 14 rounds and is the same size grip as the 9mm! It is the smoothest .45 I've tried.
  • Dale Cauthen
I bought the 4" XD in 9 just for IPSC and IDPA. Took about 300 rounds to get it broken in, no jams after that and it regularly gets 200 rounds put through it on match days between the 100-150 I'll shoot in the match and another 100 or so plinking afterward and letting people try it. Bought the 5" Tactical to see if it would shoot better but I keep it in the bag for a spare. That duty model is just too good to believe. I'm buying the 4" XD in 40 this weekend.

if any of you are serious check out the latest guns and ammo and see how the xd stood up to a more sever torture test than the glock is given, i love my xd-40

I fired my brand new XD sub compact .40 last sunday. Last time I fired a weapon was 20 years ago in the ARMY. I was expecting to shoot terribly. I use to shoot a .45(1911) and m-16, so was expecting to miss by a LOT. To my surprise I hit straight in the middle, more than that, I tore the center of the card! I didnt believe my eyes. This gun is heavy and stable. My brother was firing a Glock 22, wish seeems lighter despite the size (he is a Cop) and I fired better than him! I told him the gun must have aim and shoot itself, lol, THAT GOOD IT IS! ( I got to give HER a name do...) lol

I bought myself a Glock 27 for concealed carry, but it was uncomfortable for 8 hours of daily wear. I bought myself a small .357 revolver for concealed carry and traded the Glock 27 (.40) for a Springfield Armory XD-40. I regreted it so much. After two weeks of owning the Springfield and having consistent failures-to-feed when activating the slide release, when charging, and while shooting I went back to the gun store. I told them my experiences with the Springfield, to which they were amazed, and traded it in for a Glock 23. Never have I experienced as much malfunctions with a gun as I did with that Springfield. I had zero malfunctions with my G27, and am looking forward to shooting my new G23.
  • James
I bought an XD40 back in October and I have fired probably close to 1,000 rounds through it with Winchester 165's FMJ and Remington 180 HP's through it and I have never had a malfunction yet. It took some getting used to but now I can hold a 20 oz. pop bottle at 20 yds.
  • Thanks for your feedback John. I really appreciate it. I don't have any comparable feedback on the Taurus, but I'm leaning towards the Springfield right now. It sounds like a well built weapon that's fun, accurate and well engineered. I do much prefer the .40 cal though.
  • john
I own that gun without the taclite, in 9mm. The trigger is a jewel as you can draw back on it and hold target, then fire, double tap, etc. without having to cycle the entire length of the trigger pull. The point where the trigger will fire the round is very distintive but not heavy at all. It will tuck behind the hip without a holster and stay there, at least for me. i can also slip it into my pant front pocket. the gun is very reliable in 9mm and so fun to shoot. double taps are easy and meet the criteria of having "rounds on target". Good luck.
  • Thanks much for your feedback Mr. Barton. I certainly appreciate it.
  • Chuck Barton
Bought my XD40 subcompact yesterday evening and headed to the range. Shot the X-ring out of two targets at 25 ft right out of the box with UMC factory jacketed. 3rd box were FMJ reloads. No malfunctions but the spread was a mite bigger. Just need to find a grip extension for the 9-round mag and I'll be a very happy camper.
  • Michael,

I haven't (yet) owned a Springfield Armory weapon, but I can say that others seem to find their SA weapons reliable:

This just confirms what many of us in the shooting fraternity have known all along. That is why I own 2 Colt .45 autos and a Springfield Armory Socom in .308 cal. Many of us tried to prevent the US military from adoping the 9mm cartridge and chunking the .45 auto. Big mistake and probably cost lives in several deployments over the past few years.

It's very likely I'll purchase one of their .40 caliber weapons when I return from Iraq to the U.S. I will then report further (later this year).

Springfield Armory has been around a long time as a name, but it changed ownership in 1976.
  • Michael
I go to old car shows and sometimes carry large amounts of cash. I've been thinking about purchasing a Springfield Armory XD .40 sub compact for concealed carry. A aqquaintance of mine says Springfield Armory pistols are known to jam more then the other american made pistols, except for maybe Smith&wesson. It's funny he says that and doesnt own one altough. Are the XD Springfield's as good as glocks in terms of reliability?
  • greg
they are very reliable, i have put many rounds through my xd subcompact never had a jam and its very acurate, a coworker of mine who ownes a 357 and a 308 shot mine the other week and went right out and bought one of his own, i just installed laser grips on mine this week, they came from the factory right on target, in my opinion, this is one awsome and dependable gun
  • I own a Glock 23 and an SA XD 40 at this time Michael.

My Glock jams every so often. The SA XD 40 has not jammed yet and I have more than 1,000 rounds through the barrel.
  • Steve
I have a XD-40 Service model and love it. When I was shooting on a consistently, I could unload the clip as fast as I could pull the trigger at 25 yards, 8 shots were center chest and 2 were shoulder. The gun is picky on the ammo it like to shoot. I have had good results with Winchester and Hydro-Shock shells. Never under any circumstances fire Filoci, I hope I spelled it correctly, shells. They do not hold the correct tolerances and it will jam every time. A mistake that could cost someone their like in a bad time and place. I recommend what every you buy, pick the most accurate / trouble free ammo. Because if it clicks while you are defending yourself, family, etc.... it turns into the most expensive rock you have ever bought.

Other than that, happy shooting, be safe and have fun!
  • M.B
I am a police officer, and i want to buy one for an off duty. i was able to shoot a full size nine and i loved it. i want a subcompact .40. good price range, and looks bad ass.
  • Kitanis
I shot the predecessor to the XD-9, the HS2000. I prefer this weapon to Glocks because for me its a more balanced pistol in my hand.

I want to purchase the XD-40 myself.
