Happy Independence Day 2005

It’s not the Fourth of July, it’s Independence Day. How independent are you? Probably not very. Here’s a little image reminding you how this country originally became independent. It was through violent revolution, just in case you slept through that history class.

Bullseye @ 25 yards using Glock 23.

Shoot off your fireworks, if they’re legal in your state. Drink beer, sit around and watch TV. But remember, you wouldn’t be able to do any of the stuff you like doing if it wasn’t for the people with guns who defend you.

For the weapons aficionados who stumble by, I shot this bullseye at 25-yards with a Glock 23, using the crappiest ammo possible.

  • If the USFS treats the people who use the range like citizens, and acts reasonably in dealing with those citizens, then I think it's fine, although I think it should be handled locally or at the state level, since the federal government is not supposed to be managing anything but a common defense.

    Yes

They are going to re-open the area. The problem is.. alot of the shooters were ignorant over a period of time. I always have shot my targets or such and then took out my damaged goods, targets and empty cases.

This is sadley not the case in this popular shooting area. Old TV's, Refrigerators were brought out to fire at and left.. All kinds of trash and shell casings. The section of land belongs to the US Forest Service and a audit last summer determined that the area was to be closed until the section was cleaned up. A cordinated effort between the USFS, the County and a local gun shooting club has ironed out a agreement that the area was to be simply cleaned up by a private outfit.. that will also sift through the berms and remove as much lead as possible to satisfy the evil EPA complaint about lead in the soil.

When its all done the area will be re-opened to the general public. The land will have new berms constructed and there will be a random patrol by county sheriff deputies and a private effort by the gun club to keep the area usable and clean.

It sounds like government intrusion. but its really not. Its individual gun owners who wish to keep using a area that has been a public shooting range for years that unfortunately been abused by others. This is ONE time I have seen the USFS positively on the side of the gun owners in all my life.
  • Kitanis,

You can't shoot due to environmental cleanup efforts? What!!! Will they be reopening those areas to shooting after the cleanup is complete?

    Right On Trevor

Good to see that you enjoyed your 4th doing some relaxing shooting. Wish I could have done that myself but even in this area of long plains in the Black Hills of South Dakota.. the Safe areas to shoot were closed due to environmental cleanup efforts.

I did some metal detecting instead.. and kept finding old army minnie balls.. from shooting practice long past....
