No comprehensive reaction at this point. However, the following jumped out at me. <strong>America was not transformed from robust, freewheeling, frontier capitalism into a modern, industrial welfare state overnight. </strong> Seems to me that the last clause of this sentence may need revising so that "modern, industrial welfare state" reads instead as "modern, post-industrial welfare state." Did you see the latest figures for lay-offs in U.S. auto industry? Or GM's struggle with bankruptcy due to (1) management smarts or lack thereof and (2)draconian agreements with unions on health, pension benefits that now add at least $1500 to cost of each new car. Even Detroit may be out-sourced. Our "Japanese" cameras are made increasingly in China. Ready for a Ford made in China too?
