Or perhaps I should purchase a Taurus PT 24/7

TAURUS PT 24/7 PRO PISTOL

The PT 24/7 PRO PISTOL is a possible alternative to the SA XD40 pistol I blogged yesterday. This pistol is loudly advertised by Taurus as a Single Action Double Action! They should pay for better copy editing though. The grammar is horrible. Of course, they’re Brazilian so it could be an issue with native language versus English skills.

I’ve always considered Taurus a "budget" gun manufacturer but the PT 24/7 looks like a pistol I would enjoy test firing and perhaps owning.

    Jake,

Not sure about the rounds it SHOULD hold, but rule of thumb is don’t pack it all the way full - wears out the spring faster.

I just bought a PT 24/7 Pro .45 ACP and the first thing i noticed is that I am having some of the same issues with the magazine that others are having. I am also having an issue with the magazine falling out when I shoot, even when I make sure it is put in correctly. That same magazine will only hold 11 rounds (it’s supposed to hold 12.) Has anyone else had these problems?

I own a 1st generation Taurus PT 24/7 in 9mm cal. and had shot more than 10,000 rounds with it since 2004 and had no jams and malfunctions , the humid tropical weather here in the philippines plays a big role in making the gun fire flawlessly. I always use this gun in all IPSC and IDPA sanctioned competitions here with the 24/7 ’s performance making it at par with such popular firearms like Glocks, XD’s, CZs often times exceeding expectations. I lived with this Taurus 24/7 for quite sometime now and would not trade it for anything!

I recently purchased the 3rd generation PT 24/7 Pro Compact 9mm and I love it.  I got it for about 400 bucks and its the best compact pistol for the price.  It shoots extremely well and I also own a Kimber and H&K to compare.  Some find the trigger to be a lil weird, but I think its just right, a lil long on the travel but nothin to really complain about.  The gun allows really quick follow up shots, and the Heinie sights are not bad, take a lil getting use to with how you should aim the sights and if you’re new to Heinie sights you need to put them directly over the target and not at the 6 o’clock position that 3-dot sights require.  I find it to be extremely accurate at close range 7-10 yards and very accurate at 15-25 yards, but thats just me.  If you’re thinking about buying one, you should.  I was not a fan of Taurus before, but I am now.  I’ve shot an XD, Glock, and S&W and definitely picked the Taurus overall….in price, reliability, accuracy, and shear BAness.

I own a brand new 24/7 Pro Compact in 9mm. I had read they are shipped with grease inside and it can cause jams. The grease was there so I throughly cleaned it. When I took it to the range I put 200rds through it without so much as a burp. It performed flawlessly and was accurate to boot. I have fired a few weapons in my day and this was about the most comfortable to shoot I had seen before.

BTW..for anyone shooting low, these sights are not ment to be in the 6 o’clock position, they are ment to cover the target. Go to http://www.taurusarmed.net/ and you can see comments from owners of Taurus guns with a lot oof info covering this issue. I found it while researching this purchase.

Got my PT24/7 Pro in .45ACP to use as my concealed carry gun. What a piece of crap. I bought it new in November 2007 and I have yet to get it to fire more than twice without a jam. I have sent it back to Taurus twice, used different mags, different brands of ammo, meticulously cleaned and lubed it all to no avail. I now have two Springfield XD .45ACP’s and they will eat anything I put in them, even feeding an empty case randomly stuck into the mag. The Taurus was not my first .45 nor my first striker fired handgun. Anybody want a real deal on a twelve round single shot, contact me.

I know I will be accused of blasphemy but I’m just not a big fan of the 1911 style. I want to be, it just hasn’t seduced me yet. One thing that I found on these forums is that opinions vary greatly. No matter what brand it is, someone will bash it. Stick with a name brand and I’m sure it will be fine. Taurus does offer a lifetime warranty. Just put a lot of rounds through any gun before you are willing to defend your life with it.

I have a 24/7 .45. It has been a great pistol and accurate too. I did have one problem after about 300 rounds. The slide locked on me. I sent it back to Taurus (Lifetime Warranty) and they repaired it and sent it back. I’ve only put another couple hundred rounds through it but w/o any problems. A gunsmith I spoke to said that the problem was with the force of the recoil in the .45. He assured me that Taurus would repair it and I wouldn’t have any more problems with it. This gunsmith had nothing to do with my pistol, just met him and asked the question. Sure enough, when I broke down the pistol, Taurus had added an additional (smaller) recoil spring. Never have had a feed problem.

I bought a PT24/7 Pro 9mm. From the start i have had problems with it. It shoots about a foot lower then where you aim, literally. And this is at 15 yards! I thought maybe it was just me so i took it to an old man who works on guns and he had the same problem. I traded it to him for another pistol, and he then called taurus about it and they said they would be glad to fix it for him. I think taurus is great, im sure this is just one in a million fluke. But do shoot yours first if you can.

Done a lot of research. There are a grand total of 13 different people reporting this issue. There may have been a few bad mags, but most of the problems can be attributed to the users.

    I had a 24/7 .45 acp.

After about 200 rounds through the weapon I started to get jams, about 2-3 per 12 round magazine. I field stripped it, and still had the problems.

I spoke with other 24/7 owners. With the .45s I found about 3 out of 5 had problems with jams. After much research it seemed the problem was due to a batch of bad magazines. Taurus will replace them, but I decided to move on and traded it in for an XD.

It is not a problem with the user, it is a problem with the magazines. Not every gun has the problem, but it seems there are enough that do have the problem to make you think when deciding to buy a 24/7. Do a search online for 24/7 .45 feed problems if you would like more information..

It would seem to me the responsible course would have been a recall by Taurus, but keep in mind I am not an expert on such matters.

Most of the issues with this gun can be chaulked up to inexperience with the gun. I researched the net before buying mine. I found only 12 different stories of personal jamming issues. Many more glock and xd stories, and everyone agrees these are great firearms. Over half of the taurus accounts were first time guns, first time 45’s, or first time striker fired guns. The trigger takes getting used to and the recoil spring is very light, meaning great gun for women who want a 45 but can’t rack the slide of a 1911 ro 21. The recoil spring being light means you have to get a grip on the gun and not limp wrist. THat said it is very easy to shoot with one hand.

I have personally fired over 150 rounds with no issues.

To all of you experiencing jammong issues of varying sorts on the 24/7 pro model Taurus. I have recently purchased the same and have had 1 instance of jamming, I have operated glocks in a hostile work invironment read,(afghanistan, Iraq) and am used to the way the magazine sounds /feels when it locks in place. When my 24/7 Pro 45 jammed i noticed the “nose diving”that everyone on message boards everywhere seem to be experiencing… TO ALL I SAY, your weapon is probably malfunctioning due to operator error and not becasue it was designed /manufactured poorly… I am sure most are familiar with the term ”limp wristing” a weapon… Well that is exactly what caused my weapon to jam, while inserting the clip i heard the “click” and assumed it was good to go… I noticed an extra stiff mag. release spring when i pushed the mag into place… the first time i failed to slap the mag on the floor plate to insure the mag was properly seated “weapons malfunction”… People lets call it like it is, we all make mistakes (i handle weapons and protect dignitaries daily) and if I can own up to O.E. so can you. I bet if you check its probably the root of your problems as well.
    Not a sermon just a thought…

I bought the 24/7 pro 40. last month. I initialy purchased this gun over a Ruger due to the “TSS” lock on the slide. I have a young child and felt this would be a great length of saftey that the Ruger did not have. I also new Taurus as a good gun so I was not worried about buying into it with out knowing much about the gun. After putting 1000 rnds through this gun, I have not had a single mis-hap. No stove pipes, no nose dives, no nothing but lead out the barrel and brass out the ejection port. My wife has small hands, has never shot a gun before and loves shooting the 24/7 pro. I LOVE this gun and am going to buy a 9mm version for the wife. Good job Taurus.

I bought the new PT 24/7 Pro, and I had problems with the weapon at first. The slide locked on me and I was unable to fix the problem, so I took it to the gunsmith where I bought it seeing how the gun has lifetime warranty. The problem was the spring was a tad to long, and it overlapped itself to make the gun lock up. After being repaired, the gun has had no problems, and shoots like a dream after 500 rounds. I recommend this gun for everyone out there, and “no” Taurus does not make an inferior weapon.

darkside, you may want to be careful about the purchase in .45. There have been some severe feeding problems with it. People have had good luck filing the magazine a bit, and Taurus seems to finally see the problem, but you’ll want to be careful about the purchase.
Also, the .45 doesn’t have the overmolded rubber grip, one of my favorite features on the 9mm and .40. The magazine capacity isn’t that great, either. I believe the XD45 holds one more. That’s been another selling point for the 24/7s–they hold more bullets.

reading the reviews of the 24/7 may be misleading most shooters do not state what generation 24/7 they own. The 1st gen came out in 2002-03 and they are real POS the 2nd gen are not much better. however the 24/7 pro (3rd gen) may be a reliable sidearm. I want one in .45 as well, and plan to get it and taurus’ PT1911 later this year.

Taurus is one of the finest Firearms makers in the world, it is just bad USA press that they make inferiour weapons. Taurus actually makes several of the firearms for other well-know American firearms company (S&W)…

I was a little worried that .45acp would be too powerful for this gun but that is definatly not the case. I also love the way it fits my hand, i don’t have very large hands, it’s not overly wide and my finger has no problem with the trigger pull. Trigger is sort of weird to get used to, no more so than a Glock, but does take getting used to. Can’t beat the price, i paid $385.95 brand new.

Of course, the PT-92 is a Beretta design made on Beretta machinery left over from a Brazilian military contract. The Tactial Application blog documents problems with the 24/7. I have been able to order a new set of grips, and I have found Wolff spring kits. I would like to know how compatible the PT92 parts are with the Baretta 92? I dont care for the the trigger job and would like to work on that. I also want a milled steel hammer, because the OEM looks cast. And pending target practice, maybe a new barrel. Any resources will be appreciated. I found Bar-sto, need more options! tks
