A man falls under an RTD bus on East Colfax Avenue in Aurora and dies at the scene.

A man got off an RTD bus Wednesday morning in Aurora, collapsed and fell under the bus which drove away and the man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The incident happened around 6:25 a.m. on East Colfax Avenue at Havana Street, according to a police news release.

Rescuers found the man “with apparent traumatic injuries” at the scene where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators interviewed witnesses and found surveillance footage of the area indicating the man had been “hit by an RTD bus”, police said.

“After viewing the video footage, the man is seen exiting through the rear doors of the bus. The man is suffering from what appears to be a medical condition, collapses to the ground and falls under the bus,” the statement read. “The bus, after passengers have finished exiting and entering the bus, drives away from the stop not knowing the man was below.”

Investigators tracked the bus and driver to Union Station, where the driver was contacted and evidence was found “connecting the bus to the tragic incident”, police said.

“We are saddened by the unfortunate situation for everyone involved,” said Tina Jaquez, spokeswoman for RTD. “We are working with the authorities.”

Drugs and alcohol are not considered contributing factors to the incident. The driver volunteered and submitted to a blood test to rule out impaired faculties, police said.

The name of the bus driver has not been released. The victim will be identified by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office and their identity will be released after the family is notified of the death.

The incident is being investigated by the Aurora Police Traffic Section.
