On Jews and Violence ‹ CrimeReads

The Jews are the canaries in the mine shaft of resurgent fascism.

And we are here to tell you that something is wrong.

In many disturbing ways, the United States in 2022 looks uncannily like Germany in the early 1930s: polls indicate that at least half of one of the two major political parties believe, with no evidence to support, that left-wing and Jewish elites are plotting to eradicate the white population. American population of European origin. (Other polls put the number closer to 70 percent.) And some of this party’s leaders openly incite their supporters to commit acts of violence to support this lie.

So you have a group of angry, well-armed white supremacists who are constantly told to hate anyone outside of their group, that their very existence is in jeopardy, and that the only way to defend it is with extreme violence directed against Jews and people of color. All that’s missing are the armbands.

A quote often attributed to Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels states that if you can get people to believe one big lie, you can also get away with telling many other lies. But he probably never said that.

The origins of the term are found in the brittle and soiled pages of Mein Kampfwhere Hitler accused the Jews of using the “big lie” to undermine Germany’s actions in World War I, and claimed that the Jews were those waging “a war of extermination against Germany”, which justified his plan to exterminate them in “self-defense”. (“Big lie.”)

Something similar is happening under our noses.

To clarify: no major American political figure calls for genocide of native Americans, but many of their most extreme supporters are. Every time people start chanting slogans like “Jews won’t replace us”, someone is going to die soon.

And it certainly doesn’t help when a public figure like Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) repeatedly tweets anti-Semitic claims about how “replacement theory [is] is happening in America” in support of a conspiracy theory that – let me say it again – accuses Jews of conspiring with African Americans and other people of color to annihilate the white population of the United States.

And you know, if you have a German name, Mr. Gaetz, you might want to take it easy with the anti-Semitic statements.

Others must be oppressed and exploited because of their perceived inferior status. Only the Jews are destined for total annihilation. We can’t help but wonder why.

A constant in the black jew II anthology is that violence rarely solves anything. A few tales present homicide that is no doubt justifiable, but these are the exception.

There is a common misconception about crime and punishment in the Bible, based on passages like the “eye for an eye” in Deuteronomy 19:21, while no legally sanctioned cases of mutilation are recorded in the Bible. The standard rabbinical interpretation of these passages is that they refer to monetary compensation, “the value of an eye for the loss of an eye; the value of a limb for its loss” (Plaut 263). There is little evidence that the many death penalty offenses listed in the Torah (such as defying and disobeying one’s parents [Deut. 21:18-21]) never led to judicial executions in the Hellenic and Roman times of Late Antiquity. (How could any generation survive to adulthood if rebelling against one’s parents was treated as a capital crime?)

In fact, in a discussion of the death penalty in the Mishnah (compiled around 200 CE), the consensus is that a court that imposes the death penalty “once every seven years” can be considered “murderous”. Rabbi Eleazar ben Azariah goes further saying that “once every seventy years” is too much. Two other rabbis add that if they were in the high court, “no one would ever be put to death”, prompting a more conservative rabbi to respond that their actions would lead to increased killings (Neusner 612). Clearly, the death penalty remains controversial after more than 1,800 years.

This debate, as recorded in the Mishnah, also strongly suggests that progressive Jews outnumber conservative Jews by approximately 3:1, which is essentially the same ratio you’ll find in the United States today.

Instead of a literal eye for an eye, the Israelites are instructed, “Justice, thou shalt pursue righteousness” (Deut. 16:20). In my own story, “Bride of Torches,” one of the purposes is to show how the legacy of violence in ancient Israel, particularly in the days of Judges, does not necessarily lead to lasting peace.

The opening section of Black Jew II is called “Legacies”. It features stories by Steven Wishnia, Doug Allyn, Elizabeth Zelvin and Jeff Markowitz that describe the horrific effects of anti-Semitism – from Hitler’s genocidal war to America’s “nice” anti-Semitism of the 1950s. by the current resuscitation of zombie attitudes. and conspiracy theories directed against Jews who should have been defeated long ago, and the challenges inherent in countering these attitudes.

For a section titled “Scattered and Scattered,” we sought out non-Jewish authors from around the world, including Gabriela Alemán from Ecuador, Joy Mahabir (Trinidad), and Xu Xi, whose story is set in Hong Kong. We also found a guy who lives in Israel and writes in Hebrew. I think his name is Yigal Zur…which sounds pretty Jewish…

And in a section on “American Splendor,” you’ll meet the Nazi in the basement, the Hanukkah killer, and a troubled guy named Hunter.

Many stories show that Jews behave badly: jealous rivalry within families, abusive behavior of religious chauvinists, real estate greed in Manhattan, adultery and murder (they go hand in hand!), greed (did I mention greed?) , obsession, lifelong trauma, plus many other black favorites.

Jews have always excelled in this kind of self-criticism, and we don’t need anyone’s help to do that. Example: The biblical book of Kings is the only official annals of a great society in the ancient Near East which was very critical of its monarchs. Most of the kings of Israel and Judea are portrayed in a negative light, which is absolutely not the case with the official Egyptian and Assyrian annals, whose kings are always victorious, even when historians know they have in mind. lost a particular battle.

In other words, we usually tell the emperor that he has no clothes.

And emperors don’t like that.

So do your part to fight the rise of fascism and donate a copy of Black Jew II to someone you love.
